About our community
Who can join co-op?
THG Cooperative is for families with at least one homeschooling child. We are an all-ages co-op with class offerings from pre-k through high school. Any Tallahassee-area homeschooling family whose oldest child will be at least 5 years old by the start of the next semester is welcome to join the waiting list. Admission to the co-op is first come first served and depends on the availability of space within our maximum membership. We are a secular and inclusive group and we do not require a statement of faith.
When and where does co-op meet?
THG Cooperative meets on Mondays from 11:00 am - 3:15 pm near Midtown Tallahassee. Each co-op semester lasts from 10-12 weeks, and we offer a spring and fall semester each year. Community Day, an optional meeting for clubs and other activities, meets on Wednesdays.
Are there fees to participate in co-op?
Each family is charged an enrollment fee per semester to cover rent, insurance, and other costs associated with running our non-profit. Our current enrollment fee is $70 per family per semester, with potential adjustments on an annual basis. We anticipate an increase in our enrollment fee for spring 2025. Limited scholarships are available. In addition to enrollment fees, individual class supply fees are determined by each teacher and may vary based on the specific course requirements.
What does a typical co-op day look like?
We schedule three 1-hour class periods as well as a 45-min lunch/social break. Each class period offers a variety of classes. Families are not required to be on campus and participate in all three class periods, however, every child must be registered for either a class or for the nursery while they are on campus and parents must commit to volunteering while on campus. Parent participation in co-op is mandatory and we do not offer a drop-off program.
Who teaches classes?
Current co-op parents serve as the teachers for the classes, collaboratively brainstorming with assistance from members for class ideas. Children are highly encouraged to submit class ideas!
What if I am not interested in teaching?
Each family is required to volunteer in order to keep our co-op running smoothly. Parents who are not teaching a class contribute to the co-op in other ways, such as serving as classroom aides, participating in clean-up duties, lunch monitoring, and other volunteer jobs.
How do children sign up for classes?
During registration, children will be able to register for their preferred classes via our online class registration system.
What classes are offered?
Our class offerings each semester typically encompass a mix of academic and enrichment classes. Past classes include: Fiber Arts, 21st Century Music & Music Technology, Civics, Climate Science, Drama for High School, World History, Preschool Science, Chess, Dystopian Books, Cooking, Geometry Art, Florida Ecology, Circle Time, Ancient Greece, Fairy Tale Science, Board Games, Hands-on Art History.
